Answers to your questions about working with a trauma counsellor
Every person is different. If you’ve experienced a single incident of trauma, you may only need 3 or 4 sessions.
If your experience is more complex, it will likely take longer to resolve. Most people need between 4 sessions and 13 sessions. That is, weekly sessions for up to 3 months.
For the small number of people with high level, very complex trauma (eg continued childhood abuse/neglect) they may require more sessions than suggested above.
We can advise what we expect in your case at your first or second appointment.
Traditional 45-50 minute therapy sessions get used up in preparation, review closing planning. By having longer sessions, you get more time to work effectively with your trauma counsellor. This means fewer sessions, with improved results. You’ll potentially move forward faster, saving time and money overall.
Yes. Research — and our own experience — show that online therapy with a skilled trauma counsellor is just as effective as in-person sessions. It offers accessibility, privacy, and comfort, without compromising quality.
It’s perfectly reasonable to be concerned. Going over past events in detail can retraumatise you. To avoid that, we can work with minimal detail. For example, in a case of childhood abuse, the trauma counsellor knew only the first name of the perpetrator and the room where the abuse happened. There was no need to share more detail, and the treatment was highly effective.

You need a reliable internet connection and a device (computer, tablet, or smartphone). Your trauma counsellor will send you a secure link via email, and you don’t have to download any software. We recommend but do not require headphones. They improve audio quality and protect your privacy.
We use secure, enterprise-grade systems for all data storage. We are legally required to keep data for up to seven years, but when your treatment has finished we archive your data from online systems to offline storage for enhanced security.
We do not disclose any of your personal information except where legally required (eg subpoenas, risk-of-harm situations) or with your prior consent (eg., reports to GPs or employers).
We may use legislation compliant AI to streamline processes such as the recording of clinical notes. This allows us to focus our attention on you during sessions, instead of continually jotting down notes. For your security and privacy, your data is stored locally and is not fed into AI training systems.
