Most clients begin with an initial consultation to explore their situation and determine the most appropriate approach.
Yes. Many people begin with a conversation to explore their situation and determine whether this approach is appropriate for them.
No referral is required. You are welcome to contact the practice directly to arrange an initial consultation.
Yes. All sessions are conducted with a high level of confidentiality and discretion, in line with professional and ethical standards.
Information shared during therapy is treated with respect and discretion. There are limited circumstances under Australian law where confidentiality may need to be breached, such as where there is a serious and immediate risk of harm to you or another person. These situations are uncommon and will be clearly explained as part of the informed consent process.
Vista Advanced Psychological Therapy does not upload clinical notes or consultation information to the My Health Record system. Many clients value the additional privacy this provides, as therapy records remain confidential within the practice rather than being stored in a broader national health record system.
Many individuals who attend the practice hold positions of significant professional responsibility, and maintaining a discreet and confidential therapeutic environment is a fundamental part of how we work. Our practice is structured to prioritise privacy in all aspects of the client experience, from appointment scheduling through to the management of clinical records.
For many professionals, the ability to discuss personal matters in a confidential environment outside their professional networks is an important part of seeking psychological support.
Online therapy (video consultations) is conducted using secure technology. Video sessions and data transmitted between participants are protected using end-to-end encryption with industry-standard security protocols to help ensure that information shared during consultations remains private and secure.
Clinical information is stored using secure, enterprise-grade systems in accordance with Australian healthcare privacy legislation. Records are retained for the legally required period and archived securely when no longer actively required for clinical care.
If you have any questions about confidentiality or privacy, these can be discussed during your first appointment.
Fees are discussed at the time of enquiry or booking. As a private billing practice, sessions are not bulk billed.
Yes. Research — and our own experience — show that online therapy with a skilled therapist is just as effective as in-person sessions. It offers accessibility, privacy, and comfort, without compromising quality.
Your first session is an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to therapy and what you would like support with.
Many people feel some uncertainty or nervousness before their first appointment. This is entirely normal. We aim to provide a respectful and comfortable environment where you can speak at your own pace.
The first session typically involves exploring your current concerns, relevant background, and what you hope to gain from therapy. From there, we begin to consider the most appropriate approach moving forward.
Our work is grounded in evidence-based psychological therapies and tailored to each individual so that therapy reflects your specific needs and circumstances.
You are always in control of what you choose to share and the pace at which we explore things.
You do not need to prepare anything in advance — simply come as you are.
What you may need for your first appointment
Just yourself. If you wish, you are welcome to bring a partner, friend, or support person.
If your appointment is online (video consultation), you will receive a separate email before your session containing a secure link to join the appointment. At the time of your appointment, simply click the link to join.
How to prepare
If attending in person, arriving a few minutes early can help ensure you do not feel rushed.
Some people find it helpful to briefly reflect beforehand on what has brought them to therapy or what they would like support with. If you are unsure, that is completely normal — these questions are explored together during the session.
It is also common for people to notice doubts or second thoughts before their first appointment. This is a normal part of beginning something new.

Vista Advanced Psychological Therapy provides evidence-based psychological care for a range of emotional, psychological, and behavioural concerns.
We commonly support individuals experiencing:
• Trauma and complex trauma, including the lasting effects of distressing or adverse experiences
• Anxiety, stress and mood difficulties, including depression, burnout and overwhelming life pressures
• Personality and interpersonal difficulties, including patterns that affect relationships, emotional regulation, or wellbeing
• High-pressure roles and performance environments, including leadership, professional, and competitive settings
• Major life challenges, including relationship difficulties, significant life transitions, and periods of psychological strain
Psychological therapy can also support individuals seeking to strengthen resilience, improve psychological functioning, and better navigate complex personal or professional circumstances.
If you are unsure whether therapy may be helpful for your circumstances, an initial consultation can provide an opportunity to discuss your situation and explore appropriate options.
It is very common for people to feel concerned that discussing traumatic experiences might make things more distressing. Many individuals share this worry before beginning trauma therapy.
Trauma-focused therapy is designed to be approached carefully and at a pace that feels manageable. The aim is not to overwhelm you, but to support your nervous system and psychological wellbeing while gradually addressing the impact of past experiences.
Importantly, effective trauma therapy does not require individuals to repeatedly describe traumatic events in detail. Many modern trauma-focused approaches allow people to process traumatic memories without needing to share the full details of the experience.
At Vista Advanced Psychological Therapy, trauma work is approached thoughtfully and respectfully, with a strong focus on emotional safety and stability. Our clinicians have undertaken additional training in evidence-based therapies specifically developed for trauma and complex trauma. This is important because some therapeutic approaches are not recommended for the treatment of trauma-related concerns.
We utilise one of the most extensively researched psychological therapies for trauma, which is recommended internationally within trauma treatment guidelines.
If you have concerns about this, they can be discussed during an initial consultation so that the therapeutic approach can be tailored to your comfort and readiness.
Many people who seek trauma therapy have previously tried other forms of support without finding them helpful, and part of our work is to carefully adapt the therapeutic approach to suit each individual’s experiences and needs.
No referral is required to book a private consultation.
Some clients choose to access therapy privately, while others attend with a referral from their GP under a Mental Health Care Plan to access Medicare rebates.
If we’ve missed something, please ask! You can share your questions with us via the contact page or during a complimentary 15 minute consultation.
Psychological therapy is most effective when it can be adapted to the needs of each individual and the nature of the concerns being addressed. For this reason, Vista Advanced Psychological Therapy offers a range of appointment formats, including different session lengths, varying session frequency, and the option of intensive therapy programs.
Some individuals benefit from standard 60 minute sessions, particularly when working through a specific concern or engaging in therapy over a longer period of time.
In other situations, longer sessions can be helpful. Additional time can allow for more in-depth therapeutic work, particularly when exploring complex experiences, trauma-related concerns, or patterns that benefit from more comprehensive discussion and therapeutic processing.
For some clients, more frequent sessions can also be valuable. Meeting more regularly may support continuity of therapeutic work and provide momentum when addressing significant psychological challenges.
Vista Advanced Psychological Therapy also offers intensive therapy programs, typically delivered over several consecutive days with extended daily sessions. This format can allow individuals to engage in more focused therapeutic work within a shorter period of time.
Some people choose this approach when they prefer to concentrate their therapeutic work into a dedicated period, when travel or scheduling makes regular appointments difficult, or when addressing concerns that benefit from a more immersive therapeutic process.
During an initial consultation we can discuss which format may be most appropriate based on your circumstances, goals for therapy, and practical considerations such as availability and scheduling.
Not always. Suitability and readiness are discussed during the initial consultation to determine the most appropriate approach.
Many people who contact the practice have previously engaged in therapy. For many, a different structure or approach may be helpful, particularly when trauma is involved. The therapies and approaches we use have been developed specifically for trauma and have a strong evidence base demonstrating their effectiveness.
