Psychological Therapy (AKA psychotherapy) or counselling?
We provide psychological therapy, but how does this differ from counselling?

Whilst there are similarities in the two approaches, there are some key differences, briefly summarised below:

-
Psychotherapy addresses core, underlying issues, such as adversity, abuse, neglect, trauma etc. that influence present behaviour and emotions.
-
-
Counselling tends to focus more on the current problem and life transitions.
-

-
Psychotherapy is a form of treatment to improve conditions related to the mind or thoughts.
-
Counselling generally refers to using interventions such as advice, support, encouragement, active listening, &guidance to help with personal issues.
-
-
Psychotherapy generally treats a broader range of more complex problems
-
Counselling tends to focus on a specific issue

What is Trauma Focused Therapy and how is it different to other therapies?

Leading experts and governing bodies only recommend particular therapies for the treatment of trauma / complex trauma, based on extensive research. It is very common for people to not be fully aware of the ongoing impact their earlier life experiences have on their current life, such as decision making, relationships, sense of safety and trust, concentration, and even their physical and mental health.

The right evidence based therapy, tailored to your needs, is essential to achieve optimal outcomes. The wrong therapy (or therapist) can result in poor outcomes, potentially worsening of symptoms and your time and money wasted.

For example, have you ever talked to someone about your experiences and distress, and noticed that you may feel a little better for a day or two, but after that, feel back to your where you started (or worse, feel 'triggered' at having talked about your experiences)?
Trauma is far more complex than experiencing nightmares and 'flashbacks' as often depicted in the media. It commonly has a profound effect on our self-esteem, mood, social activity, relationships, intimacy, physical health, mental health, emotions, sleep, pain and many other aspects of daily life.

At Vista Advanced Psychological Therapy, we carefully consider each person's circumstances to utilise the approach that best suits their needs.
